CHPA is currently seeking an attorney to serve as our associate general counsel. This position will provide legal advice and recommendations to association staff and members on a variety of legal, legislative, administrative and policy issues, including federal and state statutory and regulatory compliance matters. Additionally, this position oversees the administration of legal instruments on behalf of the association and task groups, such as contracts and cost-sharing agreements. The incumbent advises association staff and committees emerging legal issues for consumer healthcare products, antitrust, government ethics, and business law. This position will have opportunities to initiate new programs to improve Association value to members in legal and policy area.
Counsels internal and external stakeholders on compliance matters including antitrust law, government ethics, lobbying reporting requirements, corporate law, and federal and state statutory and regulatory compliance matters.
Manages contract compliance for the association and task groups by drafting agreements and extensions and re-negotiating arrangements.
Serves as the liaison between the association and task groups and committees on legal matters.
Represents industry interests on range of regulatory matters including responding to FDA and related agency rule making proposals, drafting comments, and attending agency meetings.
Assures compliance with all laws and regulations affecting the association; communicates policies and procedures by conducting staff trainings with assistance from outside counsel.
Assists with drafting newsletter articles, special memos, and briefs to keep members abreast of legal matters.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Law degree and at least eight years of work experience, at least 3-5 years of which is in law practice in a food and drug law firm, FDA, or pharmaceutical company.
Knowledge of food and drug law, legislative, and political processes.
Ability to understand legal issues affecting trade associations, their structure, functions, corporate requirements, and general administration.
Ability to perform legal research including statutory analysis, regulatory analysis, and legislative history, using electronic research tools and other means.
Effective negotiation skills, exceptional legal writing skills, and the ability to speak in public confidently.
Willingness to travel > 10 percent.
Excellent leadership skills with an ability to collaborate with multiple teams simultaneously.
Ability to exercise good judgment in a rapidly changing and sometimes stressful environment.
Ability to identify opportunities and areas for improvement.
Oral & Written Communication
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however serves as a coach and mentor for internal and external stakeholders.
