Essential Job Duties:
North Carolina State University is seeking a senior level food scientist (Research Associate) to coordinate research, design and new product development in collaboration with entrepreneurial companies in the new North Carolina Food Innovation Lab on the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis.
This position will be expected to be engaged with the entire NC Food Innovation Lab consortium (NC Dept. Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and NCSU Department of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences) to encourage entrepreneurial companies to establish in North Carolina. The position will work alongside the Director to recruit companies to use the facility, and will lead efforts in new product ideation, prototype development, and recommending unit operations for scale-up. This position will be tasked in ensuring that all product specifications must meet or exceed all product requirements, regulatory standards, including but not limited to Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI), US Department of Agriculture, or other quality and food safety requirements. This position will operate under minimal supervision from management and have discretion to adjust formulas, product evaluations, or other variables during the development phase.
- Lead ideation efforts with customers with improve product concepts in order to identify potential line extensions, and product adjacencies. - Collaborate closely with the Pilot Plant Manager during product pilot runs. - Participate in training and workshops the North Carolina Food Innovation Lab offers.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
- Knowledge of chemical composition, structure and properties of substances, chemical processes, production techniques, produce specifications, food safety, and safe food storage and handling techniques. - Demonstrated ability to move products from ideation to commercialization. - Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to apply clear logic to troubleshoot and resolve conflicts and unexpected outcomes. - Evidence of effective communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences. - Demonstrated interpersonal and relationship building skills with both internal and external contacts.
- 6 years' experience in product research and development. - 3-5 years of project management experience. - Certified Better Process Control School and/or Acidified Foods Manufacturing School. - In-depth knowledge of requirements for nutritional data and regulatory requirements from FDA and USDA as well as state and local health and food safety code. - Previous experience with HACCP and cGMP requirements. - 3 years of pilot plant working experience. - 5 years of research and development experience. - Evidence of highly developed research skills and the ability to find, analyze, interpret, and critique data quickly and accurately. - Evidence of strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize concurrent projects.
