Research Assistant or Specialist, Laboratory-(170001MV)
TheDepartment of Radiation Oncology is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant or Specialist forthe Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS). These positions are responsible for performing animal research activities and animal clinical carein a laboratory setting. Work is performed in accordance with departmentStandard Operating Procedures (SOPs), animal welfare regulations, the Guide forthe Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services (PHS), Office ofLaboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for assessment and Accreditationof Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC) guidelines, and/or United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA)21CFR58 Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations.
Applicants may be considered for either the Research Assistant or Research Specialist role depending on their level of experience and education.
Thisposition will require regular weekend and/or holiday work.

Perform routine laboratory maintenance andresearch activities per established department SOPs, study/IACUC protocols, andin compliance with GLP regulations. Activities may include but are not limitedto: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health, collection ofcultures and biological specimens, administration of pharmaceuticals andnutrients, including anesthesia, and performing euthanasia.
Perform some advanced laboratory researchactivities per established department SOPs, study/IACUC protocols, and incompliance with GLP regulations. Activities may include but are not limited to:serum chemistry, white blood cell differentials; preparing cell samples forflow cytometry analysis and operation of flow cytometry; performing cellseparations by density gradients; obtaining blood, bone marrow, and tissuesamples; performing animal surgery and providing post-operative care.
Maintain detailed, accurate, and legiblerecords for all animal procedures performed and instrumentation employed tocomply with the Guidelines of Good Laboratory Practice.
Perform literature research, editing andpreparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics forpublication.
Perform administrative duties such as:assisting in developing policies, studies, procedures and/or methods forlaboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in biology,chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Three years of related experience with at least 2 in the relevant specialization required to be considered at the Specialist level.
Preferred: Previous experience working under GMP or GLPregulations preferred.
Other: Consideration may be given for aunique combination of education and experience.*
May require training related to occupational safety andhealth, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/orionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18credits in a field related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, asappropriate, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year ofexperience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic orlaboratory, as appropriate. Except for qualifications established by law,additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work ofthe job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement ona year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year ofexperience.
